The Writers’ Hangout: Story Structure

This month’s Writer’s Hangout is focused on story structure and the different ways stories can take shape.

Structure can sometimes feel restrictive or overly technical, especially when people start reducing stories down to formulas and diagrams. This session is about approaching structure in a more creative and flexible way, looking at how stories are built while also exploring what happens when writers experiment with that shape.

We’ll discuss the fundamentals of traditional story structure, but also look at non-linear storytelling, fragmented narratives, shifting timelines, repetition, memory, and the use of time as part of the storytelling itself.

If you’ve ever had a piece of writing that feels difficult to organise, or you’re trying to work out how different scenes and ideas connect together, this session is a chance to step back and explore it with other writers.
