About the event

This month’s Writer’s Hangout is focused on dialogue and how characters speak on the page.


We’ll be exploring what makes dialogue feel natural, engaging, and true to character, while also looking at how conversations can reveal emotion, tension, conflict, humour, awkwardness, and subtext without everything needing to be explained directly.


A lot of dialogue problems come from characters sounding too similar, scenes becoming overly expositional, or conversations not carrying enough energy underneath them. This session is a chance to bring those scenes into the room, hear them out loud, and explore what might help them feel more alive.


Bring exchanges, scenes, unfinished drafts, or pieces of writing where the dialogue doesn’t quite feel right yet. You’re also welcome to come along simply to listen, write quietly, or spend time around other writers.
