About the event
Kiyoshi Kurosawa often creates fear by letting us look at an ordinary room for longer than feels comfortable, holding the camera back until empty space and familiar furniture begin to lose their safety.
December opens with the first Forbidden Room encounter from Pulse. Sammy Holden will take the sequence apart to locate the moment unease begins, the point at which the figure becomes visible and why seeing it offers no relief. The discussion will stay close to Kurosawa’s choices as a filmmaker rather than reducing the scene to a general idea of “Japanese horror”.
For the practical part, each group will receive a photograph of an ordinary room. Using a floor plan and six fixed frames, they will decide where the viewer initially feels safe before changing a single detail near the end of the sequence.
Timing will matter as much as the image. Groups will choose how long each…
