About the event

A stranger arrives at a bourgeois household in Milan and is welcomed without question. Over time, he seduces each member of the family, father, mother, son, daughter and maid, before suddenly departing.

Pasolini strips the film back to image, gesture and silence. Dialogue is sparse. Emotion sits in the body. The camera observes without judgement. The result feels less like narrative and more like an experiment: what happens when desire enters a closed system and exposes everything holding it together? In the discussion, we’ll look at how Pasolini constructs that system, the framing, the stillness, the refusal to explain motive. We’ll consider the film’s relationship to class and Catholicism in 1960s Italy, and how its political charge sits inside something that often feels abstract, even mythic.
