About the event
Last Year at Marienbad
A man insists he met a woman the year before, at Marienbad. She denies it. Around them, an ornate hotel becomes a maze of memory, suggestion, and repetition. Alain Resnais’s Last Year at Marienbad is one of cinema’s most enigmatic works, a film where time bends, truth slips away, and the story unfolds more like a dream than a narrative.
After the screening, we’ll stay in the cinema for a Cinema // After session led by Let’s Make Films. Together, we’ll explore how a film with no fixed timeline or “answers” can still hold its audience, and what that means for our own storytelling. We’ll dig into structure as mood rather than map, the role of the unreliable narrator, and how repetition and visual rhythm can pull us deeper into a story.
Cinema // After is a new screening and discussion series at Picturehouse Liverpool. Each event…
